WiFi Calling allows you to use your existing U Mobile number to make and receive calls using a WiFi connection. Your WiFi hotspot effectively becomes a U Mobile network tower. Enjoy huge savings while overseas when calling Malaysian numbers at a local call rate with no roaming surcharge.
Effective 22 January 2025, VoWiFi is available while roaming in all countries except Myanmar. Calls to Malaysian numbers while in Myanmar will be subjected to roaming surcharges.
To activate WiFi Calling, follow these steps:
Step 1: Insert U Mobile SIM into your iPhone.
Step 2: Activate the service. Text < WIFICALLING ON > via SMS to 28118.
Step 3: Enable WiFi Calling. Select Settings > Phone > Wi-Fi Calling > toggle to ON.
Step 4: Connect to a WiFi network.
Step 5: If WiFi Calling is activated, you will see “U Mobile WiFi”. All calls will then be made using WiFi Calling.
Most devices and phones can support WiFi Calling. Kindly check with the device or phone manufacturer for compatibility.
Yes, it does. You will need to update to the latest iOS firmware and install the latest “carrier bundle”. To install the bundle, go to Settings > General > About > Install.
All U Mobile subscribers on postpaid and prepaid plans are eligible for WiFi Calling, as long as your rate plan supports “voice call”. It is not available for “data only” plans such as Postpaid MB.
All you need is a private or public WiFi network that is connected to the Internet. However, the recommended wireless LAN is either the 802.11n or 802.11ac standards as they provide a better data quality connection.
Yes, a valid and active U Mobile SIM card is required. If your line is barred, suspended or terminated, you will not be able to make a call. If you have a dual-SIM phone, please insert your U Mobile SIM into Slot 1.
You can retry setting up WiFi Calling again. If it still doesn’t work, try out these steps instead:
Step 1: Connect to a different WiFi network with a stronger signal.
Step 2: Turn the WiFi Calling OFF and ON again
Step 3: Restart your phone
Note: Some corporate networks may block WiFi Calls. If this continues, call your network administrator for assistance.
There are a few possible reasons:
WiFi Calling requires an adequate Wi-Fi signal strength before initiating the automatic connection to WiFi Calling. Move to an area where the signal’s connection is stronger.
If the WiFi network has a captive portal (Eg. Starbucks which requires log in), you may have to launch your browser and sign in to the network with the provided username/password.
- For public WiFi networks, the provider may have policies in place to block WiFi Calling service.
You do not need to register for IDD or IR service in order for you to use the WiFi Calling service when abroad to call back to Malaysia. However, if you need to make any outgoing IDD calls, you will need to enable IDD services.
To make a call abroad without using the WiFi Calling service, you will need to enable the IR service as well.
No, you will not be charged for incoming calls while using WiFi Calling abroad.
Effective 22 January 2025, VoWiFi is available while roaming in all countries except Myanmar. Calls to Malaysian numbers while in Myanmar will be subjected to roaming surcharges.

Yes, you can send an SMS even though you are connected to WiFi Calling. However, the SMS will be sent through your mobile network instead of the connected WiFi network.
We are working to enable SMS to be sent over WiFi networks.
Emergency services number 112 and 999 are routed through your normal mobile network service. If you turn on WiFi Calling and cellular service isn't available, the emergency call will use WiFi Calling to route you to a Malaysian emergency service number.
When your phone is connected to a WiFi hotspot, the call you make will be sent to the U Mobile network via the internet. From here, U Mobile will then connect your call to the recipient.

U Mobile Digital School is a key Digital Business pillar, where we focus on delivering solutions and services that serve the Education sector, i.e. the School and Learning communities.
Projek Rintis is U Mobile’s pilot initiative under the U Mobile Digital School pillar, aimed at accelerating the country’s digital transformation.
It is a school community platform that drives financial literacy amongst Government school students; with a Cashless Payment solution catered towards students, parents, teachers and school operators.
Launched in 2024, Projek Rintis is a year-long program in collaboration with five selected Malaysian Government schools. It is designed to break the barriers of digitalisation, where we as U Mobile, fully sponsor and implement a comprehensive Cashless Payment ecosystem. We achieve this with our Technology partner, Debit Circles Sdn. Bhd. (Vircle), who has developed the Cashless Payment fintech application and platform.
We aim to reach and benefit the lives of students, parents, teachers, and school merchants (canteen operators, bookstore operators, koperasi operators, and more).
Community-wide, the Cashless Payment solution delivers innovation as it uplifts and catalyzes the digital transformation of processes.
For Students, the Cashless Payment solution presents itself as a convenient payment method with an NFC card. The solution helps to increase financial literacy from a tender young age, as it enables them to handle finances and gain a better understanding of money matters early on.
For Parents, they enjoy the convenience of managing their children’s school allowance through a secure app, which is synced to the NFC card. They get peace-of-mind as they can monitor their children’s expenditures, and even manage their food intake by pre-ordering healthy, nutritious meals in school. An additional perk is that the solution encourages bonding between child and parent, as it is an interactive financial platform.
For Teachers, the platform offers superior control over daily operations as it reduces the workload caused by managing cash in school.
For Schools, this solution brings innovation by digitalising their key operations (canteen operations, bookstore operations, koperasi operations, as well as PIBG fees).
Yes, the Cashless Payment solution is safe. Debit Circles Sdn Bhd (Vircle) is fully regulated under the Bank Negara Malaysia's Financial Services Act as an e-money service operating under the Principal Licence of Fass Payment Solutions Sdn Bhd.
Child-friendly safety measures and controls are in place within the app. For example, it allows parents to immediately freeze their child’s NFC card at just the touch of a button. They are also able to order a replacement card if the card is misplaced or lost.
Yes, we are open for all schools to approach us for the cashless payment ecosystem and financial literacy platform, and any other digitalisation and innovation needs.
Please contact us via email at digitalschool@u.com.my and we will be in touch with you.
Through our experience and expertise in connectivity, we envision ourselves creating more digital solutions and services that cater to different verticals and sectors of society.
For now, we are focused on elevating the Education sector, adding value by delivering proven solutions that address the community’s needs.
As a digital company, we welcome partners to collaborate with us; to co-innovate and co-create solutions and services that serve the communities’ needs for the greater good.
